DIY Argan Oil Recipes for Skin and Hair

Argan oil is a natural oil native to Morocco. It is extracted from the kernels of the argan tree, Argania Spinosa, and has been used for centuries as a natural hair and skin care product. It is packed with vitamins E, A and C, antioxidants and omega-6 fatty acids, making it one of the most nutrient rich oils.

Argan oil pairs well with other oils so it makes an excellent carrier oil for DIY skin care remedies. You can use it on its own or try one of our DIY recipes below.

DIY Argan Oil Remedies

Because Argan oil is one of our favorite oils and because it blends so well with other ingredients, we’ve created many DIY beauty recipes using it.

  1. DIY Hair Mask for Damaged Hair

Argan oil has great moisturizing properties because it is rich in vitamin E and fatty acids, while coconut oil is known to repair brittle hair and split ends. This makes the two oils a perfect combination for a weekly hair mask. Essential oils are beneficial to both the hair and the scalp.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp Coconut oil

  • 1 tbsp Argan oil

  • 4 drops Lavender or Peppermint oil

Directions:

  1. Mix the coconut oil and argan oil in small bowl.

  2. Heat the mixture on low heat until clear.

  3. Once cooled, add the essential oils and mix well.

  4. Apply the mixture evenly to your damp hair using your hands. Don’t forget about the scalp and the roots!

  5. Let it sit for 1-2 hours (the longer it sits, the better it will work).

  6. Wash it out and shampoo as needed.

  7. Repeat hair mask once a week.

2. DIY Hair Growth Mask

Argan oil is rich in antioxidants, which can help reduce oxidative stress and free radicals that cause hair loss, and can also help to maintain healthy hair growth. Paired with olive oil, which is beneficial for the hair and scalp, and follicle stimulating essential oils, this weekly mask is an ideal treatment for thinning hair.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp Olive oil

  • 2 tbsp Argan oil

  • 3 drops Peppermint oil

  • 3 drops Rosemary oil

Directions:

  1. Add the oils to a small bowl and mix well.

  2. Apply directly to your scalp and let it sit for at least 20 minutes (the longer it sits, the better it works).

  3. Wash out and shampoo as you normally would.

  4. Repeat at least once a week.

3. DIY Acne Treatment Serum

Pairing Tea Tree oil with Argan oil helps to increase Argan oil's anti-acne benefits. Hemp seed oil helps to balance the skin's natural sebum production. This serum blend is ideal for helping to treat existing acne as well as to prevent new acne from appearing.

Ingredients:

  • 4 drops Argan oil

  • 4 drops Hemp seed oil

  • 4 drops Tea Tree oil

Directions:

  1. Add ingredients to a small bowl and mix well.

  2. Use either an applicator brush or very clean fingertips to apply the mixture evenly to your face.

  3. If planning to apply other products (moisturizers or makeup), let the mixture completely dry first.

  4. Repeat daily for best results.

4. DIY Anti-Aging Face Mask

Argan oil is high in Linoleic acid, which helps to tighten the pores and increase the skin's elasticity. Honey is rich in antioxidants that can help slow down signs of aging. These characteristics make these two a perfect combination for an anti-aging face mask.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp Argan oil

  • 2 tbsp Honey

Directions:

  1. Mix the argan oil and the honey in a small bowl until a paste consistency is formed.

  2. Apply to the face using a mask brush or very clean dry hands if you don’t have a brush.

  3. Leave on for 8-10 minutes.

  4. Rinse off completely using warm water and pat your skin dry.

  5. Repeat once or twice a week for best results.

When creating your own products at home, the quality of the ingredients matters. Stick to organic ingredients to avoid adding toxins to your skin, and buy from a reputable source to ensure that the oils are pure and made without any additives, fillers or preservatives.
