Peppermint Essential Oil: Benefits for Skin and Health

Peppermint Essential Oil has all sorts of benefits and a wide range of uses. Because of its healing properties, it is commonly used as an ingredient in skincare and beauty products. Peppermint oil can be applied topically or diffused for inhalation and is most known for its ability to reduce itching and swelling, ease muscle pain and relieve headaches.

Health Benefits of Peppermint Essential Oil

  1. Eases Headaches

Peppermint oil helps to relieve tension and relax the muscles, which in turn can help in reducing the symptoms associated with headaches and migraines.

  2. Reduces Stress

The essential oil is known to promote deep relaxation in the body and the mind, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.

  3. Disinfects Wounds

Because of its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, it can be used to disinfect and clean skin wounds, and can also be used to disinfect surfaces.

  4. Relieves Nausea and Indigestion

While peppermint tea is widely used as a remedy for an upset stomach, there are also benefits to inhaling Peppermint Essential Oil. Inhaling it or diffusing it can help relieve symptoms of nausea, indigestion, and even Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

Skin Benefits of Peppermint Essential Oil

  1. Reduces InflammatioN

Because of its anti-inflammatory benefits, Peppermint essential oil helps to reduce redness, irritation and inflammation of the skin.

  2. PROMOTES HAIR growth

Applying a small amount of peppermint oil to the scalp and hair follicles helps to increase blood circulation and promote hair growth.

  3. Repels Insects

While humans find the smell of Peppermint essential oil refreshing, insects despise it. Dab a few drops of Peppermint oil on the skin (diluted with another oil) and the pests will be gone in no time.

Safety Tips for Using Peppermint Essential Oil

While essential oils have many healing properties, please keep in mind that essential oils are highly concentrated and precautions need to be taken when using them. Here are some safety considerations to keep in mind when using Peppermint Essential Oil:

  • One of the most important things to remember when using peppermint oil, is that less is more. Start with 1-2 drops (diluted properly in a carrier oil, such as Almond, Jojoba or Olive), and add more later if needed.

  • Peppermint essential oil is for external use only, meaning you should not ingest it. At times, the essential oil is confused with the peppermint plant leaves, which are edible. Make sure to be clear on the difference.

  • As with any essential oil or new skin care ingredient, we always recommend testing on a small patch of skin before applying to a larger area. Because essential oils are highly concentrated, some people may experience a negative or allergic reaction to them. It’s important to dilute essential oils properly in a carrier oil before applying to the skin.

  • People with the G6PD enzyme deficiency should avoid Peppermint oil topically and in aromatherapy products.

Who Can Use Peppermint Essential Oil?

Almost anyone can use Peppermint essential oil; however, it is not recommended to use on infants as negative side effects may occur if they inhale the menthol in the oil.
